Prepare your publishing agreement

Before Compass sells or distributes an author's book, both parties need an agreed publishing/distribution contract. This is a non-binding terms checklist, not a contract for signature.

Author's legal name Author type Correspondence email Licence scope Proposed term Formats licensed

Contract points to agree before any launch Author confirms copyright and artwork permissions; original files remain theirs unless explicitly licensed Territories, formats, exclusivity and third-party sublicensing rights are written down Author and Compass agree net-receipts definition, costs, royalty share, reporting, payment dates and refunds Terms explain cancellation, termination, notice, returns, and removing books from retailers Rights warranties, copyright claims, AI-content declarations, quality, privacy and dispute procedures are agreed

Compass's proposed 70% author / 30% Compass share of eligible net receipts is not a binding offer. The actual agreement must state how taxes, printing, marketplace fees, discounts and refunds are handled. Author signatures, identity checks and a complete audit trail must use a secure authenticated system. A UK publishing solicitor should review final terms before launch.

Tax and payment preparation

Compass is UK-based. Select the author's tax residence and legal type to see the relevant guidance — never enter tax IDs, bank account numbers or identity documents here.

Tax residency Receiving royalties as UK VAT status (if relevant) Payment country (planning only)

Before approved royalty payouts The publisher will verify the legal payee's identity and eligibility Tax residence and payer requirements will be confirmed securely Any US withholding forms will be completed with the actual payer (KDP/D2D/other) when required Bank or payout account details will be supplied only through secure onboarding The author understands they may need to declare royalty income to their own tax authority

UK books, ebooks and audiobooks

Most qualifying printed books and readable eBooks are 0% VAT in the UK. Audiobooks are generally 20% VAT if the seller is VAT registered; rights/licensing services can have different VAT treatment. A UK business generally must register for VAT if taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 in a rolling 12 months, or is expected to exceed it in the next 30 days. Check the supplier, country, and place-of-supply rules before applying any rate.

Amazon / Draft2Digital and US taxes

When US-source royalties are paid to a non-US recipient, the payer may require W-8BEN for an individual or W-8BEN-E for a company. US persons generally provide W-9. Treaty relief and withholding are determined by the payer and applicable tax rules, not this Compass planner.

This is orientation, not tax advice. A UK accountant should review Compass's VAT treatment, royalty accounting and international withholding exposure. Authors should take country-specific tax advice where needed. No tax identifiers or payout details are requested or stored here.

Review your book before moving forward

Check the information below before downloading. Your draft stays on this device until Compass launches authenticated author submissions.

This wizard creates a **local preparation draft only**, not a live title, ISBN, book upload, third-party application, contract, checkout or submission. A future publisher account, file storage, editorial approval and written rights agreement are required before Compass can sell or distribute your title.
